Import data from Google Analytics
You can import your historical data from Google Analytics into Pageviews. This lets you see all your analytics in one place — including traffic from before you installed Pageviews.
Before you start
- You need a Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property. Universal Analytics (UA) properties are not supported.
- You must have read access to the GA4 property you want to import from.
- Only one import can run at a time per site. Wait for any active import to finish before starting a new one.
How to import
- Go to Site Settings → Imports.
- Click the Google Analytics button.
- You'll be redirected to Google to authorize Pageviews to read your analytics data. Sign in and grant access.
- After authorization, you'll see a list of your GA4 properties. Select the one you want to import from.
Click Start Import.
Date range
The import date range is determined automatically. Pageviews imports all available data from your GA4 property, up to the day before your first native Pageviews event. This avoids overlapping imported and native data. If you have no existing data yet, the import runs up to yesterday.
What gets imported
The import pulls the following data from Google Analytics:
- Daily stats — Visitors and pageviews per day.
- Top pages — Page paths with visitor counts.
- Traffic sources — Source, medium, and visitor counts.
- Geography — Country and city data with visitor counts.
- Devices — Device type, browser, and operating system breakdown.
Tracking progress
After starting the import, you'll see it listed under Existing Imports with a progress bar. The page automatically refreshes to show the latest status. Imports typically complete within a few minutes, depending on the amount of data.
Viewing imported data
Once the import is complete, the imported data is merged seamlessly with your native Pageviews data. Select a date range in your dashboard that covers the imported period to see the combined results.
Limitations
- Aggregate data only — Google Analytics provides aggregated metrics, not individual events. This means visitor counts for periods spanning both imported and native data may show slight overlaps, since cross-day deduplication isn't possible with aggregate data.
- No session data — Bounce rate and session duration are not available for imported data.
- No custom events or goals — Only standard pageview and visitor metrics are imported.
Deleting an import
If you want to remove imported data, go to Site Settings → Imports, find the import in the list, and click the delete button. This removes only the imported data — your native Pageviews data is not affected.
